Ann Hite - Author of "Ghost on Black Mountain"

Teen Read Week

Hand Made Book Exhibit

Ruth Kramedjian is exhibiting her hand made books in the library display cases. Ms. Kramedjian is a graduate of the University of Georgia with degrees in drawing and painting and art history.

In her current exhibit, she has moved to a more intimate output with the art of the handmade book. She incorporates her own art forms and collage in the books that she makes. She is exploring not only book forms, but also the art of handmade paper.

Well - The Friends of the Smyrna Library will be holding their annual Summer Frozen Yogurt Social in the Library this Sunday (July 10th) from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will be free frozen yogurt from Pinkberry and live music performed by Peter Vogl.

FYI - Peter Vogl has performed on the stage with great musicians from all around the world including Michael Bolton, Bo Diddley, Earl Klugh and James Brown. This will be cool fun for children and adults.

Patricia Sprinkle - Indian Travels Program

Internationally renowned mystery writer, Patricia Sprinkle, went on a five-week trip to India and Nepal last fall. She taught creative writing to middle-school students in a small village for three weeks, but also rode an elephant, visited the Taj Mahal and saw the Himalayas.

Patricia now qualifies as a legitimate adventurer and the story of her travels is sure to be interesting and entertaining. Personally, I want to hear the details about her midnight ride in a tuk-tuk (an auto rickshaw). Apparently, it bordered on being a religious experience.

You won't want to miss this. Ms. Sprinkle's program will be in the Library meeting room at 7:00 p.m. next Wednesday, March 23rd.

Cobb Photographic Society Exhibit

The Cobb Photographic Society is exhibiting members works in the library through April 30th. This diverse exhibit includes everything from portraits and landscapes to digitized pictures look like impressionist paintings.

The Cobb Photographic Society welcomes photographers of all skill and ability levels. The common bond is a desire to become better photographers. Whether an individual's interest is in capturing memories, sharing pictures with friends, or becoming a semi-professional or professional photographer, the club offers many ways for members to enhance their skills.

There are speaker meetings on the third Monday of each month and workshops and tutorials. If you're interested in photography, check them out. Come by the library and see examples of the great work they've done.

Author Thomas Mullen Coming to the Smyrna Library

Get up close and personal with a great young author. Thomas Mullen will be the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Smyrna Reading Group next Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m.

Thomas Mullen is the author of The Last Town on Earth, which was named the Best Debut Novel of 2006 by USA Today, was a Chicago Tribune Best Book of the Year, and was awarded the James Fenimore Cooper Prize. His latest book is the critically acclaimed, The Many Deaths of the Firefly Brothers.

Attendance at this meeting is free and open to the public. Arrive early so you can get a good seat.

New Catalog Software

The Library has new catalog software and we're excited. It has a crisp, clean appearance and is packed with new features.

One change is the book river. There is a constantly flowing river of book covers on the main page. If you see something you like, you can click on it and get more information. We also have genre browsing bars that let you scroll through science fiction, mystery and romance novels. There's a box for New York Times bestsellers and another for new books.

It's easier to reserve and renew books. You can set up an easy access user name and make changes to your profile. Check it out. I think you'll be pleased and surprised.

Every speaker was interesting. The intimate setting let participants get up close with the authors. The food was great. And the weather even cooperated.

If you weren't there, ask someone about the customs and border protection program. I learned beagles are cute, but sneaky.

Dr. Susan Kirkpatrick Smith - Murder Goes South

The Murder Goes South Mystery Festival starts tomorrow. Are you excited?

Dr. Susan Kirkpatrick Smith from U.S. Customs and Border Protection is one reason you should be excited. She received her Ph.D. from Indiana University. Her areas of research interest include skeletal analysis and the interaction between health and social status in Greek populations. She spent a year living in Athens, Greece researching skeletons from the Late Bronze Age cemetery at the foot of the Acropolis. Her teaching interests include forensic anthropology, human evolution, and human biological variation.

Dr. Smith will be giving two presentations about forensic anthropology and how it can be used in the murder mystery business. The first, "Death, Decay and Decomposition" highlights what happens in the body after death. The second program "Who are You? Age, Sex, and Skeleton" will tell you everything that can and can't be learned about your deceased from a skeleton. Both programs will invite vigorous questioning from the audience.

Mitchell Graham - Murder Goes South

Mitchell Graham was born in New York City. He attended college at Ohio State University on a fencing scholarship and later went on to earn a law degree. After practicing for twenty years he went back to school to study neuropsychology. He has represented the United States in international fencing competitions and has won or placed in the finals of 83 tournaments.

The Fifth Ring was his first novel and received rave reviews. His mystery novels include Majestic Descending, Dead Docket and Circle of Lies, which was released in November. Mitchell currently lives in Miami.

Williams Rawlings, Jr. - Murder Goes South

William Rawlings Jr. is one of our featured writers. Like generations of his family before him, William Rawlings, Jr., was born in Sandersville, Georgia where he still lives on the family farm with his wife and two children. He was educated at Emory University and Tulane where he earned a Master's Degree and his Doctorate in Medicine. He did his post-graduate medical training in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital after which he returned to Sandersville to practice medicine. Late in his successful medical career he began writing about the real South, a passion easily recognizable in his literary work.

His first novel The Lazarus Legacy was published in 2003 followed in the next three by The Rutherford Cipher, The Tate Revenge, and Crossword. William's latest novel, The Mile High Club, was published in 2009. He is currently working on two projects, a suspense novel set in Savannah and a non-fiction history of an infamous 1926 murder.

Cathy Pickens has been, under different names, a lawyer, a business professor, an university provost, a clog-dancing coach, a church organist/choir director, typist and successful mystery writer.

The most profound influences on her life have been her family, her faith, Nancy Drew, and Perry Mason. She grew up in a small town and was forced to move to big cities to support herself first as an attorney and then as a professor. Cathy found the only way to get out of the cities comfortably was by moving "Avery Andrews" back home and chronicling her exploits. Lee Lofland - Police Procedure and Investigation

Lee Lofland is a veteran police investigator who began working as an officer in Virginia's prison system. He later became a sheriff's deputy, a patrol officer and finally received his gold shield as a detective.

During Lee's career he solved cases involving narcotics, homicide, rape, murder for hire, and occult crimes. He worked undercover for several jurisdictions and received advanced certifications from several law enforcement organization. It is thrilling to hear Lee describe his career. He's a born raconteur, able to explain the gamut of police work from boring routine to piercing moments of terror.

Glynn Marsh Alam is a native Floridian. Born in Tallahassee, she is familiar with the live oak forests and the cypress swamps of the area. She also knows the sink holes and reptilia that abound there. She often swims in the cold, clear springs above the openings to fathomless caves. These are the settings for her Luanne Fogarty mystery series and for her literary novel.

After graduating from Florida State University, Glynn worked as a decoder/translator for the National Security Agency in Washington D.C., then moved to Los Angeles where she taught writing and literature while earning an M. A. in linguistics. After many years of traveling back to Florida, she has moved there again and writes full time.

Just a reminder - The Eigth Annual Murder Goes South Mystery Festival will be held January 29th and 30th. Murder Goes South is a festival for readers and writers of the southern mystery.

Friday night January 29, 2010 at 7:00pm there will be a dinner with writer Erica Spindler as the featured speaker. Ms Spindler is New York Times best selling author of "Breakneck" and "Last Known Victim" and lives in Louisana.

Saturday January 30, 2010, 9:30am-4:30pm will feature workshops, panel discussions, and book signings. Some of the writers are Fran Stewart, David Hunter, Carla Dameon and Debby Guisti.

Did you know the Smyrna Library subscribes to the Film Movement series of DVDs?

Film Movement scours the world's top film festivals each year including Cannes, Sundance, Toronto and New York to select the best, award-winning films from among thousands of qualified entries. Selections are approved by our panel of Curators who come from such prestigious film institutions as Lincoln Center, the American Film Institute and Roger Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival.

This month's selection is Troubled Water. This is an award winning Norwegian film about a man released from prison after serving time for the murder of a child. Tension builds to a great climax when the child's mother runs into him playing the organ at a church.

Busy as Bees

WOW!

June was the busiest month in the history of the Library.

The number of items checked out increased almost 10% over the same time last year. 5,862 adult books, 8,168 juvenile books and 8,089 audiobooks and DVDs were checked.

27,831 visits were made to the library. (That's 927 people a day.) 2,030 came to the library June 20th alone.

Every SRC Club program has been booked to capacity. Over 160 parents and children attended the Snakes 'R' Us family story time.

I don't know where everyone is coming from, but you're all welcome.

Health Screenings

CobbWorks and Amerigroup Community Care come together to provide job support assistance and free health screenings at the Smyrna Public Library. Amerigroup's Community Outreach Vehicle will be on-site providing free blood pressure and diabetes screenings with Fun and Games for the kids.

The Cobb Works Mobile Career Center is at the Smyrna Public Library every Wednesday from 10 to 2. This state of the art center includes twelve computer stations for job searches and staff to help you prepare your resumes and fill out job applications online.

Black History Month

February is Black History Month and the Library added a database that will make doing those school papers a little easier. There's free access to activities, lesson plans, quizzes and articles including Contemporary Black Biography, the Harlem Renaissance and Opposing Viewpoints.

All you have to do is click on the "Databases" link on the Library catalog. Then click on the Black History Month picture. You'll be off and running.

Murder Goes South - January 24th

Just a reminder - The Seventh Annual Murder Goes South Festival is just two weeks away on Saturday the 24th. There's a great lineup of Southern mystery writers and your $25.00 admission includes a boxed lunch from the New York Deli.

In mysteries background information is critical. Here's a little background information about the authors that will be at the Festival.

Dr. Bill Bass is a world-reknowed forensic anthropologist, who founded the University of Tennessee's Anthropology Research Facility, the "Body Farm", a quarter of a century ago.

Rita Herron has written over thirty books, including her Maggie Award winning book, Her Eyewitness.

Robert Lamb teaches at the University of South Carolina and has just released a new book, Atlanta Blues.

William Rawlings, Jr. is a lifelong resident of Sandersville, Georgia where he practices medicine, runs a travel agency, grow pines, restores antique buildings and keeps busy writing.

John Thompson was an investment banker in New York. Currently he is the Chair of the Charleston Education Network. His first novel is The Armageddon Conspiracy.

Jaclyn Weldon White was born in the South and is the author of six books including Distant Hearts, The Empty Nursery, and Whisper to the Black Candle.

NY Times Bestseller List

Every time I use the Library's new catalog, the wide variety of features amazes me. One of the coolest is the "Hot Titles" button.

Library users are always asking staff about books on the New York Times bestseller list. i.e. What's on the list? What's it about? - and most importantly - Does the library have it? The answer to those questions are no more than three clicks away.

If you log on to the Smyrna Library website and go to the catalog, you'll see a menu bar accross the top. Click on "Hot Titles" and a list of links will appear. These include award winning books, Oprah's selections, Publisher's Weekly and the New York Times Best seller lists.

Click on a list and you'll see bookcovers, reviews and plot summaries for the books. Click on a book cover and the catalog will search for a copy and if it's in. If the book is checked out you can reserve it online.

As my daughter says "Cool Beans." Check it out today.

2008 Election Information

This is going to be an important election for the United States and every citizen needs to be informed about the issues and the candidates.

Project Vote Smart (PVS) is a bipartisan project that provides biographical information, voting records, and issue positions of national, state and local candidates. In addition it has records on interest group ratings, copies of public statements and campaign finance records. It's your one-stop source for election information.

The Library has added a link to PVS in its database section. (Strategically placed in the middle.) Just going to the site is an interesting experience. You can see how elected officials vote in different states and develop a clear understanding of the major issues between the parties.

Check it out and exercise your most important right. Vote! If you don't, someone else will make the decision for you.

Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy

Have you ever wondered about the great questions of life like: What is existence? Is it ever moral not to tell the truth?

Philosophers have been trying to answer those questions for over two thousand years and they want to share their ideas with you. The Smyrna Library has added access to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy on its database page.

Read what Socrates and Plato thought about good government. Review Descartes arguments proving individual existence and other philosophers saying not so fast. The Encyclopedia provides concise articles on all the major issues written by internationally recognized authorities.

If you read one article a day for a month and you'll be thinking like a philosopher for the rest of your life.

SABA Art Exhibit

The Smyrna Artists' Business Association (SABA) will be exhibiting a collection of locally produced art from its members in the upstairs display cases through October 31. SABA supports Smyrna's thriving local artist community and strengthens Smyrna's identity as an artist's city and a city of art.

Mark your calendars - SABA will also be holding the first ever Spirit Walk/Art Talk on October 18th. Fine art displays as well as family-friendly entertainment including music and storytelling will be featured. You definitely want to check this out.

Rossetta Stone has decided to quit providing access to their programs through libraries. Apparently, they feel they can make more by selling subscriptions to individuals. On September 15 we converted to Mango Languages. Try it out - It takes a different approach, but I think you'll like it.

The new school year has started and the Smyrna Library has added a new online database that will make it easier to get good grades in history and government.

Milestone Documents in American History combines 133 full-text primary source documents with expert analysis and commentary. Students are able to see the actual documents online with clear explanations of each document's meaning and importance. Term papers practically write themselves.

Obviously, this site will be a treasure trove of information for history buffs as well as students. Call the library for your password and check it out.

High Museum Docents Exhibit in the Library Gallery

Docents from the High Museum of Art are exhibiting their works in the Library gallery upstairs. This interesting show displays art by the people that explain art to others at the Museum.

Kay Weeks is from Duluth and has been a docent for 11 years. She has been painting for 45 years and oil painting is her medium of choice.

Larry Skal is from John's Creek and has been a docent since 1992. His paintings are in watercolor, acrylic, and oils. Samples of each are on display.

Jane Lamkin is from Smyrna and is a Docent Emeritus at the High. She has been painting for 28 years and is exhibiting her water colors.

This is an interesting concept. See it today.

The library now offers over 500 videos, including award-winning movies, foreign and independent films from Film Movement, and lifestyle programming that you can download in minutes via your Internet connection and watch on your home computer workstation or laptop.

To get started, call the library's reference desk (770 431-2860 x 4) to request your My Library DV (MLDV) password. Then go to the library homepage, click on the MLDV link, then click on the icon that looks like this.

Follow the simple download instructions and you'll be set to watch Antiques Roadshow, Rick Steves' Europe, Globe Trekker, Today's Homeowner, Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home, as well as children's shows such as Caillou and Boobah.

Art in the Library

Growing up within the dynamics of two divergent cultures Grace Hashimoto found constancy and purpose in creative expression - practicing music, creative writing and drawing in her formative years, progressing to formal training at Kyoto Art college where her studies focused on weaving and batik.
In her early 20's Grace married, took the name Hashimoto, and gave birth to a son - the perfect expression and promise of unity. Today, Ms. Hashimoto, her son and other members of her family continue to offer their unique bi-cultural perspective in their livelihoods both in the United States and abroad.
In Grace Hashimoto's art, one can see the sparse and elegant lines of eastern culture merge with the numerous colors and complexity of western culture in expressions of diversity and union.
Ms. Hashimoto's exhibit will be on display through April 30.

New Exhibits

There are two new exhibits in the library. Bob Meadows uses a wide variety of exotic and handmade papers with wood, leather and other materials to create one-of-a-kind artist's books in a wide variety of styles and formats. Examples of his work are in the library display cases. Grace Hashimoto is exhibiting her works in the art gallery. The sparse and elegant lines of eastern culture are merged with the numerous colors and complexity of western culture in expressions of diversity and union. Both exhibits will be in the library through April 30.
